Sportradar at the Australian Open

The Australian Open heads into its final climax this weekend, and Sportradar has been there  every step of the way in Melbourne, delivering AV, Data and Integrity services this last two weeks. And,  beyond that, we recently announced a wide-ranging multi-year partnership extension with Tennis Australia.

As part of the deal, Sportradar will continue to deliver their AV, data and Integrity Services for the Australian Open, the Grand Slam of the Asia Pacific, including the Main Draw, Qualifiers and Wild Card play-offs in Melbourne and Zhuhai, China, as well as the ATP 250 Adelaide.

On-site in Melbourne covering Australia’s summer of tennis since 2016/17, Sportradar has been responsible for helping to showcase one of the most prestigious international sporting events for fans across the world. Our team on the ground in 2020 has helped to deliver the matches via its AV encoding services, providing high-definition streams for the Australian Open’s official website, app and social media channels, along with broadcast partners in multiple territories, including Australia, New Zealand, India and the Sub-continent, and the Americas.

With 16 courts delivered in a fully redundant setup the Sportradar team has been encoding almost 500 different stream renditions and outputting 1000 unique streams in parallel for more than 12 hours of play each day. We have a team in Melbourne consisting of system admins from Trondheim and Warsaw, Video Technology Team in Trondheim, and live operators from Vienna.

“The new development for this year was a web-based GUI for operating a Server-Side Ad-Insertion, operated by the host broadcasters, along with workflow management in AVCMP and video-encoder features in VTD for triggering ads in the streams” added Peder Drege, Chief Streaming Architect at Sportradar.

This is a workflow that is now certified with the established ad-integrator Yospace, which Tennis Australia’s media-partners chose to use. Also redundancy and failover was improved this year to achieve a high availability setup and the development of a new and automated workflow for delivering VODs and recordings to the client and its media partners.

Sportradar will utilise its unique combination of technology and expertise to administer and analyse data from each match to provide entertaining content and statistics for its clients to increase audience engagement. At the same time, it will deploy its award-winning Integrity Fraud Detection Services (FDS) to protect all matches from betting-related integrity threats.
